LKP Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening LKP Files
Microsoft Systems Management Server Not Present
Double-clicking your LKP file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open LKP File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Systems Management Server isn't installed on your PC. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the LKP file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another LKP application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Outdated Microsoft Systems Management Server
Your Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Data file is incompatible with Microsoft Systems Management Server because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Microsoft Systems Management Server version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Data file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Systems Management Server than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the LKP file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the LKP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed.
Other LKP File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening LKP files even with the latest version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading LKP files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for LKP
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry LKP description
- Defective install of a LKP program, such as Microsoft Systems Management Server
- Your LKP can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Malware-tainted LKP file can't be opened
- LKP-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Data format
