Understanding LXA Issues
Troubles Opening LXA Files
Missing Microsoft Office
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open LXA Files" when trying to open your LXA. When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Office missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your LXA with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your LXA file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Microsoft Office is Out-of-Date
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Office installed that's incompatible with your Microsoft Speech Lexicon File type. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Office from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Speech Lexicon File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Office than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your LXA, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Conclusion: The majority of LXA file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Office version installed.
Other Causes of LXA File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Office will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening LXAs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- LXA file type Registry entries are wrong
- Corruption of the LXA file description inside the Registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Office that did not fully complete
- Your LXA file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Speech Lexicon File file itself)
- LXA file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your LXA file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Microsoft Speech Lexicon File file
