Common Problems Opening MBX Files

Microsoft Outlook Express Not Present

If you attempt to load your MBX file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open MBX Files". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Outlook Express for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the MBX file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your MBX, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Wrong Version of Microsoft Outlook Express is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Outlook Express Mailbox file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Outlook Express installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Outlook Express Mailbox file was created by a newer Microsoft Outlook Express than what you have installed.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your MBX file and clicking "Properties".

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening MBX files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Outlook Express installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading MBX Files

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Outlook Express installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MBXs. Other MBX opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

• Windows Registry MBX file paths that are incorrect
• The MBX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
• Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MBX format
• Your MBX can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
• MBX file integrity has been compromised by malware
• Hardware associated with MBX has outdated drivers
• Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Outlook Express Mailbox file
