MDMP File Complications
Troubles Opening MDMP Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Isn't There
When trying to open your MDMP file, you get the error "Can't Open MDMP File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your MDMP file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual Studio
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual Studio isn't able to open your Windows Minidump file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Windows Minidump file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than you have on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your MDMP, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Regardless, most of the MDMP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Other MDMP File Issues
Although you might already have Microsoft Visual Studio or another MDMP-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Windows Minidump files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MDMP files. These issues include:
- MDMP file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the MDMP file inside the Windows Registry
- Microsoft Visual Studio or another MDMP application experienced a flawed installation
- Your MDMP file is corrupted (issues with your Windows Minidump file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your MDMP
- MDMP-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Windows Minidump format
