Troubleshoot MDP Files
Typical MDP Opening Challenges
Microsoft Visual C++ Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MDP Files" when trying to open your MDP. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Visual C++ for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your MDP file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your MDP, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Microsoft Visual C++ is Installed
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual C++ isn't able to open your Visual C++ 5 Workspace File file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Microsoft Visual C++ version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your Visual C++ 5 Workspace File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual C++ than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your MDP file and clicking "Properties".
Primarily, problems experienced when opening MDP files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed on your computer.
Other MDP File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening MDP files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading MDP files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:
- Invalid MDP file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the MDP file description inside the Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MDP format
- MDP file corruption
- The MDP is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for MDP-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Visual C++ 5 Workspace File file
