Understanding MEM Issues
Common Problems Opening MEM Files
Microsoft Visual FoxPro is Not Installed
Double-clicking your MEM file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open MEM File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Visual FoxPro for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your MEM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, and you know of another program to open your MEM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed that's incompatible with your FoxPro Variable File type. Download the latest Microsoft Visual FoxPro version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: If you right-click on your MEM file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of MEM file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Visual FoxPro version installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening MEMs
Errors opening FoxPro Variable File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Visual FoxPro software installed on your computer. Other MEM opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry MEM file paths that are incorrect
- Accidental deletion of the description of the MEM file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual FoxPro that did not fully complete
- MEM file corruption
- Past or present virus infection has affected your MEM
- MEM-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your FoxPro Variable File file successfully
