Sources of MFI Problems
Common MFI Opening Problems
Microsoft Windows Isn't There
When you double-click your MFI file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Windows for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your MFI because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens MFI files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Microsoft Windows Version
Your Windows 98 Resource Kit Data Format file is incompatible with Microsoft Windows because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your Windows 98 Resource Kit Data Format file was created by a newer Microsoft Windows than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the MFI file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening MFI files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional MFI Opening Issues
Although you might already have Microsoft Windows or another MFI-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Windows 98 Resource Kit Data Format files. Other MFI opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Other contributing causes:
- MFI file type Registry entries are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MFI description
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Windows or other MFI-related program
- Your MFI can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- MFI file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for MFI-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Windows 98 Resource Kit Data Format file
