Troubleshoot MIG Files
Frequent MIG Opening Issues
Windows Easy Transfer Not Present
When trying to open your MIG file, you get the error "Can't Open MIG File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Windows Easy Transfer for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your MIG with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens MIG files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Windows Easy Transfer is Out-of-Date
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Windows Easy Transfer installed that's incompatible with your Windows Migration Backup File type. Download the latest Windows Easy Transfer version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Windows Migration Backup File file was created by a newer Windows Easy Transfer than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of MIG file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening MIG files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional MIG Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Windows Easy Transfer installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MIGs. If you're still experiencing problems opening MIG files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- MIG file type Registry entries are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the MIG file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a MIG-associated program (eg. Windows Easy Transfer)
- File corruption affecting your MIG file
- The MIG is infected with a virus
- Drivers associated with MIG software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Windows Migration Backup File files
