Understanding MIX Issues
Typical MIX Opening Challenges
Microsoft Picture It! Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MIX Files" when trying to open your MIX. Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Picture It! for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your MIX with Microsoft Picture It!, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another MIX application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Microsoft Picture It! Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft Image Exchange File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Picture It! if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Investigate your MIX file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of MIX file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Picture It! version installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening MIXs
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Picture It! version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening MIX files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading MIX files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry MIX file paths that are incorrect
- Deletion of the MIX file description from the Registry by mistake
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MIX format
- File corruption affecting your MIX file
- Your MIX is infected with malware
- Device drivers for MIX-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Image Exchange File format
