Sources of MMC Problems
Common Problems Opening MMC Files
Microsoft Office Not Present
If you attempt to load your MMC file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open MMC Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Office for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another MMC-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Microsoft Office is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Office installed that's incompatible with your Microsoft Media Catalog type. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Office from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Media Catalog file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Office than what's installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your MMC file and clicking "Properties".
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Office version on your computer can cause problems opening MMC files.
Other MMC File Opening Causes

- Your MMC can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
