Sources of MPS Problems
Frequent MPS Opening Issues
Vim Isn't There
When trying to open your MPS file, you get the error "Can't Open MPS File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Vim for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the MPS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Vim installed, and you know of another program to open your MPS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of Vim
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Mathematical Programming System File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Vim from Bram Moolenaar is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Mathematical Programming System File file was created by a different (newer) version of Vim than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the MPS file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening MPS files are due to having the incorrect version of Vim installed on your computer.
Other MPS File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening MPS files even with the latest version of Vim installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MPS files. Other contributing causes:
- MPS file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- The MPS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Corrupt install of Vim or other MPS-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your MPS
- Your MPS has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware related to MPSs has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Mathematical Programming System File file
