Troubleshoot MPV Files
Troubles Opening MPV Files
Missing CyberLink PowerDVD
When you double-click your MPV file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to CyberLink PowerDVD missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your MPV with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens MPV files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
CyberLink PowerDVD is Out-of-Date
Your MPEG Elementary Stream Video File file is incompatible with CyberLink PowerDVD because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of CyberLink PowerDVD from CyberLink is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a MPEG Elementary Stream Video File file version that was created by a newer version of CyberLink PowerDVD than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your MPV file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening MPV files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other MPV File Issues
Even with the correct version of CyberLink PowerDVD installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MPVs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MPVs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid MPV file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The MPV file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Corrupt install of CyberLink PowerDVD or other MPV-related program
- Your MPV can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- MPV file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with MPV software need to be updated
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your MPEG Elementary Stream Video File file
