MSC File Summary

The MSC File Extension has four different file types (mostly seen as the Microsoft C Makefile format) and can be opened with five distinctive software programs, with the dominant related application developed by Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft Visual C++ software). These files can be categorized as Uncommon Files, System Files, or Data Files. In the majority of cases, these files will be Uncommon Files.

Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems can be used to view MSC files. Both desktop and mobile devices enable you to view and (sometimes) edit these files, depending on the software used. These files have a Popularity Rating of "Low", meaning they are not very commonly observed on your average hard disk.

Although there is a lot more to know about MSC files, those are the most important details of these types of files. If you are having trouble opening these files, or would like more detailed information, please see our comprehensive information below.

Troubleshoot MSC Files

Issues Opening MSC Files

Microsoft Visual C++ Not Present

If you attempt to load your MSC file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open MSC Files". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Visual C++ isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your MSC file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Wrong Version of Microsoft Visual C++ is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft C Makefile file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ if you don't have the right version. Your Microsoft C Makefile file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual C++ than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the MSC file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Visual C++ version on your computer can cause problems opening MSC files.

Other MSC File Opening Causes

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Visual C++ will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening MSC files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for MSC are wrong
  • The MSC file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MSC format
  • The MSC itself is corrupted
  • Malware-tainted MSC file can't be opened
  • Drivers associated with MSC software need to be updated
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Microsoft C Makefile file
