Sources of MSVC Problems
Issues Opening MSVC Files
Microsoft Visual C++ is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MSVC Files" when trying to open your MSVC. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual C++ is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the MSVC file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your MSVC, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual C++
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed that's incompatible with your Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler Makefile type. Download the latest Microsoft Visual C++ version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler Makefile file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual C++ than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the MSVC file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening MSVC files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed.
Other MSVC File Issues
Errors opening Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler Makefile files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Visual C++ software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening MSVC files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for MSVC are wrong
- Corruption of the MSVC file description inside the Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MSVC format
- The MSVC itself is corrupted
- Malware-tainted MSVC file can't be opened
- Hardware related to MSVCs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler Makefile file successfully
