Understanding MSX Issues
Common MSX Opening Problems
Microsoft Age of Empires Removed
Double-clicking your MSX file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open MSX File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Age of Empires for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the MSX file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Age of Empires installed, and you know of another program to open your MSX file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated Microsoft Age of Empires
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Age of Empires installed that's incompatible with your Age Of Empires II Saved Game type. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Age of Empires installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Age Of Empires II Saved Game file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Age of Empires than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the MSX file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Age of Empires version on your computer can cause problems opening MSX files.
Associated Difficulties Loading MSX Files
You can still experience errors opening MSX files even with the latest version of Microsoft Age of Empires installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading MSX files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- MSX file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Corruption of the MSX file description inside the Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MSX format
- File corruption affecting your MSX file
- Past or present virus infection has affected your MSX
- Hardware related to MSXs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Age Of Empires II Saved Game format
