Troubleshooting Problems Opening NATVIS Files
Issues Opening NATVIS Files
Microsoft Visual Studio is Not Installed
You attempt to load your NATVIS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The NATVIS File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Visual Studio isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your NATVIS with Microsoft Visual Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another NATVIS application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual Studio
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual Studio isn't able to open your Microsoft Visual Studio Text Data file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio if you don't have the right version. Your Microsoft Visual Studio Text Data file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the NATVIS file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening NATVIS files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Additional NATVIS Opening Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening NATVIS files. Other contributing causes:
- NATVIS file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the NATVIS file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a NATVIS-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual Studio)
- Something has caused file corruption of your NATVIS
- Your NATVIS is infected with malware
- NATVIS-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Microsoft Visual Studio Text Data file successfully
