Understanding O Issues

Common Problems Opening O Files

Microsoft Visual Studio Removed

When you double-click your O file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your O file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your O file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Wrong Version of Microsoft Visual Studio is Installed

In other instances, your Compiled Object File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Visual Studio. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Compiled Object File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of O file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening O files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading O Files

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening O files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening Os. Other contributing causes:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for O are wrong
  • Deletion of the O file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Invalid installation of a O-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual Studio)
  • Something has caused file corruption of your O
  • Your O has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware related to Os has device driver corruption
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Compiled Object File files
