Troubleshoot OEM Files

Common OEM Opening Problems

Microsoft Windows Removed

You attempt to load your OEM file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The OEM File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Windows missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your OEM with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Windows installed, and you know of another program to open your OEM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Windows

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Original Equipment Manufacturer Setup File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Windows from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Original Equipment Manufacturer Setup File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than you have on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your OEM file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening OEM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other OEM File Opening Causes

You can still experience errors opening OEM files even with the latest version of Microsoft Windows installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening OEM files. Other contributing causes:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for OEM
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the OEM file in the Windows registry
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Windows that did not fully complete
  • Your OEM can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • OEM file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • OEM-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Original Equipment Manufacturer Setup File file
