Sources of OLS Problems
Typical OLS Opening Challenges
Microsoft Office Not Present
You attempt to load your OLS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The OLS File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Office installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your OLS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: Another OLS-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft Office Requires Update
Your Microsoft Office List Shortcut file is incompatible with Microsoft Office because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Office. Your Microsoft Office List Shortcut file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Office than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of OLS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Office version on your computer can cause problems opening OLS files.
Additional OLS Opening Issues
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Office version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening OLS files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening OLS files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for OLS are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the OLS file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a OLS-associated program (eg. Microsoft Office)
- Your OLS file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Office List Shortcut file itself)
- Your OLS has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with OLS has outdated drivers
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Microsoft Office List Shortcut file successfully
