Understanding ONECACHE Issues
Common Problems Opening ONECACHE Files
Microsoft OneNote Removed
You attempt to load your ONECACHE file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The ONECACHE File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft OneNote isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your ONECACHE with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft OneNote installed, and you know of another program to open your ONECACHE file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Microsoft OneNote is Installed
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft OneNote Cache File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft OneNote (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your Microsoft OneNote Cache File file was created by a newer Microsoft OneNote than what you have installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your ONECACHE file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ONECACHE files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft OneNote installed.
Additional ONECACHE Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft OneNote installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ONECACHEs. If you're still experiencing problems opening ONECACHE files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for ONECACHE
- Unintentional removal of the description of the ONECACHE file inside the Windows Registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft OneNote that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your ONECACHE file
- ONECACHE file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your ONECACHE file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Microsoft OneNote Cache File files
