Troubleshoot OPS Files

Frequent OPS Opening Issues

Microsoft Office Isn't There

When you double-click your OPS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Office missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your OPS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your OPS file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Outdated Microsoft Office

Your Office Profile Settings File file is incompatible with Microsoft Office because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Office (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Office Profile Settings File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Office than you have on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the OPS file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Office version on your computer can cause problems opening OPS files.

Additional OPS Opening Issues

Although you might already have Microsoft Office or another OPS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Office Profile Settings File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening OPS files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:

  • OPS file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Deletion of the OPS file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Office that did not fully complete
  • Your OPS can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your OPS has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers for OPS-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your Office Profile Settings File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
