OQY File Complications

Frequent OQY Opening Issues

Microsoft Excel Not Present

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open OQY Files" when trying to open your OQY. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Excel is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your OQY with Microsoft Excel, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When another OQY application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Outdated Microsoft Excel

In other instances, your Excel OLAP Query File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Excel. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Excel installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Excel OLAP Query File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Excel than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the OQY file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening OQY files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Additional OQY Opening Issues

Although you might already have Microsoft Excel or another OQY-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Excel OLAP Query File files. Other OQY opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • OQY file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the OQY file in the Windows registry
  • Invalid installation of a OQY-associated program (eg. Microsoft Excel)
  • The OQY itself is corrupted
  • The OQY is infected with a virus
  • Hardware related to OQYs has device driver corruption
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Excel OLAP Query File files
