Troubleshoot OV3 Files

Common OV3 Opening Problems

MS-DOS is Not Installed

When you double-click your OV3 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have MS-DOS for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the OV3 file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another OV3 application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

MS-DOS Requires Update

In other instances, your DOS Overlay File file version may not be supported by your version of MS-DOS. If you've got the wrong version of MS-DOS installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your DOS Overlay File file was created by a different (newer) version of MS-DOS than what's installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your OV3, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening OV3 files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Additional OV3 Opening Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of MS-DOS will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening OV3s. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for OV3
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry OV3 description
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the OV3 format
  • Something has caused file corruption of your OV3
  • Your OV3 is infected with malware
  • Hardware associated with OV3 has outdated drivers
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your DOS Overlay File file
