Troubleshooting Problems Opening P2P Files

Typical P2P Opening Challenges

FolderShare Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open P2P Files" when trying to open your P2P. Customarily, this means that FolderShare is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your P2P file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have FolderShare installed, and you know of another program to open your P2P file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Outdated FolderShare

Your FolderShare Placeholder File file is incompatible with FolderShare because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of FolderShare. This problem is predominately due to having a FolderShare Placeholder File file version that was created by a newer version of FolderShare than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your P2P file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the P2P file opening problems relate to not having the right version of FolderShare installed.

Additional P2P Opening Issues

You can still experience errors opening P2P files even with the latest version of FolderShare installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening P2Ps. These issues include:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for P2P are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry P2P description
  • Corrupt install of FolderShare or other P2P-related program
  • Your P2P can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • The P2P is infected with a virus
  • Hardware associated with P2P has outdated drivers
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the FolderShare Placeholder File file
