PAB Troubleshooting

Frequent PAB Opening Issues

Microsoft Outlook Express Isn't There

When trying to open your PAB file, you get the error "Can't Open PAB File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Outlook Express for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your PAB file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When another PAB application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Incorrect Microsoft Outlook Express Version

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Outlook Express installed that's incompatible with your Personal Address Book type. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Outlook Express installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Personal Address Book file was created by a newer Microsoft Outlook Express than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PAB file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Outlook Express version on your computer can cause problems opening PAB files.

Associated Difficulties Loading PAB Files

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Outlook Express installed, you can still experience difficulties opening PABs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PAB files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Windows Registry PAB file paths that are incorrect
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the PAB file in the Windows registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the PAB format
  • PAB file corruption
  • Malware-tainted PAB file can't be opened
  • Hardware associated with PAB has outdated drivers
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Personal Address Book files
