Troubleshoot PBI Files
Frequent PBI Opening Issues
FreeBSD Isn't There
Double-clicking your PBI file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open PBI File". Customarily, this means that FreeBSD is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have FreeBSD installed, and you know of another program to open your PBI file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of FreeBSD
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of FreeBSD installed that's incompatible with your PC BSD Installer Package type. You will need to download a newer version of FreeBSD if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your PC BSD Installer Package file was created by a newer version of FreeBSD than you have on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your PBI, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PBI files are due to having the wrong version of FreeBSD installed.
Other PBI File Issues
Even with the correct version of FreeBSD installed, you can still experience difficulties opening PBIs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PBI files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- PBI file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Corruption of the PBI file description inside the Registry
- Partial installation of FreeBSD that did not fully complete
- PBI file corruption
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PBI
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PBI file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the PC BSD Installer Package file
