Understanding PBK Issues

Typical PBK Opening Challenges

Microsoft Windows is Not Installed

When trying to open your PBK file, you get the error "Can't Open PBK File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Windows for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PBK file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PBK, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Wrong Version of Microsoft Windows is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Dial-Up Phone Book File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Windows installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Right-clicking on your PBK, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Regardless, most of the PBK file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Windows installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading PBK Files

Although you might already have Microsoft Windows or another PBK-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Dial-Up Phone Book File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PBK files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for PBK
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the PBK file in the Windows registry
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Windows that did not fully complete
  • PBK file corruption
  • The PBK is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers for PBK-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Dial-Up Phone Book File file
