PBR File Complications

Issues Opening PBR Files

PowerBuilder Not Present

When you double-click your PBR file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that PowerBuilder is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PBR file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your PBR file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

PowerBuilder Requires Update

Your PowerBuilder Resource File file is incompatible with PowerBuilder because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of PowerBuilder from SAP is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PBR file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Conclusion: The majority of PBR file opening issues are due to not having the correct PowerBuilder version installed.

Other PBR File Opening Causes

Although you might already have PowerBuilder or another PBR-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening PowerBuilder Resource File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PBR files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:

  • PBR file type Registry entries are wrong
  • The PBR file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Invalid installation of a PBR-associated program (eg. PowerBuilder)
  • Your PBR file is corrupted (issues with your PowerBuilder Resource File file itself)
  • Your PBR is infected with malware
  • Device drivers for PBR-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the PowerBuilder Resource File file
