Common PBX Opening Problems

PowerBuilder is Not Installed

You attempt to load your PBX file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PBX File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have PowerBuilder for %%os%% installed. You won't be able to double-click to open your PBX because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When another PBX application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Obsolete Version of PowerBuilder

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a PowerBuilder Extension File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of PowerBuilder from SAP is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your PowerBuilder Extension File file was created by a different (newer) version of PowerBuilder than what's installed.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PBX file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Conclusion: The majority of PBX file opening issues are due to not having the correct PowerBuilder version installed.

Other PBX File Opening Causes

Assuming you have the right PowerBuilder version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PBX files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PBXs. Other contributing causes:

• PBX file references in the Windows Registry are broken
• The PBX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
• Corrupt install of PowerBuilder or other PBX-related program
• The PBX itself is corrupted
• PBX file integrity has been compromised by malware
• Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PBX file are corrupt or out-of-date
• Windows cannot load your PowerBuilder Extension File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
