Troubleshoot PCK Files
Common PCK Opening Problems
Microsoft system center configuration manager is Not Installed
When trying to open your PCK file, you get the error "Can't Open PCK File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft system center configuration manager installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your PCK with Microsoft system center configuration manager, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your PCK file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft system center configuration manager
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft system center configuration manager won't support your System Center Configuration Manager Package File file. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft system center configuration manager (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: If you right-click on your PCK file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PCK files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft system center configuration manager installed.
Additional PCK Opening Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft system center configuration manager will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PCKs. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for PCK
- The PCK file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a PCK-associated program (eg. Microsoft system center configuration manager)
- Something has caused file corruption of your PCK
- Your PCK has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware related to PCKs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your System Center Configuration Manager Package File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
