Understanding PCP Issues
Typical PCP Opening Challenges
Microsoft Windows SDK Removed
When you double-click your PCP file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Windows SDK isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your PCP with Microsoft Windows SDK, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another PCP-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Windows SDK
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Windows SDK isn't able to open your Windows Installer Patch Creation Properties File file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Windows SDK from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Your Windows Installer Patch Creation Properties File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Windows SDK than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your PCP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening PCP files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Windows SDK installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening PCPs
Errors opening Windows Installer Patch Creation Properties File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Windows SDK software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PCPs. Other contributing causes:
- Windows Registry PCP file paths that are incorrect
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PCP description
- Invalid installation of a PCP-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows SDK)
- PCP file corruption
- PCP file integrity has been compromised by malware
- PCP-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Windows Installer Patch Creation Properties File format
