Troubleshoot PDM Files
Troubles Opening PDM Files
Sybase PowerDesigner Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PDM Files" when trying to open your PDM. If so, it typically means that you don't have Sybase PowerDesigner installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your PDM with Sybase PowerDesigner, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another PDM-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Sybase PowerDesigner Version
In other instances, your PowerDesigner Database File file version may not be supported by your version of Sybase PowerDesigner. Installing the latest version of Sybase PowerDesigner from SAP is recommended. Most of the time your PowerDesigner Database File file was created by a newer Sybase PowerDesigner than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PDM file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening PDM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional PDM Opening Issues
Although you might already have Sybase PowerDesigner or another PDM-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening PowerDesigner Database File files. Other PDM opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry PDM file paths that are incorrect
- Accidental deletion of the description of the PDM file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a PDM program, such as Sybase PowerDesigner
- Your PDM can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PDM
- Hardware related to PDMs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the PowerDesigner Database File file
