Troubleshooting Problems Opening PDR Files

Typical PDR Opening Challenges

Windows Control Panel Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PDR Files" when trying to open your PDR. Customarily, this means that Windows Control Panel is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens PDR files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Windows Control Panel is Out-of-Date

In other instances, your Windows Port Driver file version may not be supported by your version of Windows Control Panel. Download the latest Windows Control Panel version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Windows Port Driver file was created by a newer version of Windows Control Panel than you have on your PC.

Tip: Right-clicking on your PDR, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

• Accidental deletion of the description of the PDR file in the Windows registry
• Defective install of a PDR program, such as Windows Control Panel
• File corruption affecting your PDR file
• Past or present virus infection has affected your PDR
• Drivers associated with PDR software need to be updated
• Windows cannot load your Windows Port Driver file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
