Troubleshoot PER Files
Common PER Opening Problems
Missing Microsoft Notepad
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PER Files" when trying to open your PER. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your PER with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another PER application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Microsoft Notepad is Out-of-Date
Your Age Of Empires Personality File file is incompatible with Microsoft Notepad because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Notepad from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Age Of Empires Personality File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Notepad than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your PER file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening PER files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your computer.
Additional PER Opening Issues
Although you might already have Microsoft Notepad or another PER-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Age Of Empires Personality File files.
