Troubleshooting Problems Opening PIP Files
Issues Opening PIP Files
Microsoft Excel Removed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PIP Files" when trying to open your PIP. If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Excel installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PIP file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Excel installed, and you know of another program to open your PIP file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Microsoft Excel is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Excel installed that's incompatible with your Office Personalized Settings File type. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Excel (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your Office Personalized Settings File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Excel than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your PIP, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening PIP files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other PIP File Opening Causes
Errors opening Office Personalized Settings File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Excel software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PIP files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Windows Registry PIP file paths that are incorrect
- Unintentional removal of the description of the PIP file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Excel or other PIP-related program
- File corruption affecting your PIP file
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PIP
- Hardware associated with PIP has outdated drivers
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Office Personalized Settings File file successfully
