PKGUNDEF Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening PKGUNDEF Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared
When trying to open your PKGUNDEF file, you get the error "Can't Open PKGUNDEF File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed for %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PKGUNDEF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Microsoft Visual Studio Requires Update
In other instances, your Microsoft Visual Studio Shell File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Visual Studio. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Visual Studio Shell File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's installed.
Tip: Investigate your PKGUNDEF file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PKGUNDEF files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Other Causes of PKGUNDEF File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PKGUNDEF files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry PKGUNDEF file paths that are incorrect
- Corruption of the PKGUNDEF file description inside the Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the PKGUNDEF format
- Your PKGUNDEF file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Visual Studio Shell File file itself)
- Your PKGUNDEF is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PKGUNDEF file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Microsoft Visual Studio Shell File file
