Understanding PKN Issues
Troubles Opening PKN Files
Microsoft Systems Management Server Isn't There
When you double-click your PKN file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Systems Management Server isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Systems Management Server installed, and you know of another program to open your PKN file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Systems Management Server Requires Update
Your Systems Management Server (SMS) Package Creation Notification file is incompatible with Microsoft Systems Management Server because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Systems Management Server. The primary cause of this problem is that your Systems Management Server (SMS) Package Creation Notification file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Systems Management Server than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PKN file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the PKN file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading PKN Files
Although you might already have Microsoft Systems Management Server or another PKN-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Systems Management Server (SMS) Package Creation Notification files. If you're still experiencing problems opening PKN files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for PKN
- Unintentional removal of the description of the PKN file inside the Windows Registry
- Microsoft Systems Management Server or another PKN application experienced a flawed installation
- File corruption affecting your PKN file
- Your PKN has adversely impacted by malware
- Drivers associated with PKN software need to be updated
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Systems Management Server (SMS) Package Creation Notification file
