Troubleshooting Problems Opening PKP Files
Common PKP Opening Problems
Microsoft Visual Studio Not Present
You attempt to load your PKP file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PKP File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PKP file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: Another PKP-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft Visual Studio Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Visual Studio won't support your Visual Studio Packaging Project file. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Visual Studio Packaging Project file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than you have on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your PKP, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Conclusion: The majority of PKP file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Visual Studio version installed.
Other PKP File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening PKP files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PKP files. Other contributing causes:
- PKP file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the PKP file inside the Windows Registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual Studio that did not fully complete
- Your PKP can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PKP
- Device drivers for PKP-related hardware are out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Visual Studio Packaging Project file successfully
