Troubleshooting Problems Opening PLN Files

Common PLN Opening Problems

Microsoft Flight Simulator Removed

Double-clicking your PLN file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open PLN File". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Flight Simulator for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PLN file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Flight Simulator installed, and you know of another program to open your PLN file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Microsoft Flight Simulator is Out-of-Date

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Flight Simulator Flight Plan file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Flight Simulator if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your Flight Simulator Flight Plan file was created by a newer Microsoft Flight Simulator than what you have installed.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your PLN file and clicking "Properties".

• File references in the Windows Registry for PLN are wrong
• Deletion of the PLN file description from the Registry by mistake
• Microsoft Flight Simulator or another PLN application experienced a flawed installation
• Something has caused file corruption of your PLN
• Malware-tainted PLN file can't be opened
• Hardware associated with PLN has outdated drivers
• Windows cannot load your Flight Simulator Flight Plan file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
