Sources of PMR Problems
Typical PMR Opening Challenges
Avid Media Composer Disappeared
When you double-click your PMR file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Avid Media Composer is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your PMR with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: Another PMR-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Avid Media Composer Version
In other instances, your Avid Persisent Media Record File file version may not be supported by your version of Avid Media Composer. Visit the Avid Technology website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Avid Media Composer. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Investigate your PMR file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening PMR files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading PMR Files
You can still experience errors opening PMR files even with the latest version of Avid Media Composer installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening PMR files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for PMR are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PMR description
- Defective install of a PMR program, such as Avid Media Composer
- Your PMR file is corrupted (issues with your Avid Persisent Media Record File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PMR
- Hardware related to PMRs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Avid Persisent Media Record File file successfully
