PNF Troubleshooting
Issues Opening PNF Files
Microsoft Windows Not Present
You attempt to load your PNF file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PNF File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Windows missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PNF file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PNF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Microsoft Windows
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Precompiled INF File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Windows (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: If you right-click on your PNF file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening PNF files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Windows installed on your computer.
Other PNF File Opening Causes
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Windows installed, you can still experience difficulties opening PNFs. If you're still experiencing problems opening PNF files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for PNF are wrong
- The PNF file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Microsoft Windows or another PNF application experienced a flawed installation
- Your PNF file is corrupted (issues with your Precompiled INF File file itself)
- PNF file integrity has been compromised by malware
- PNF-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Precompiled INF File files
