Troubleshoot PRG Files
Issues Opening PRG Files
Notepad++ Disappeared
You attempt to load your PRG file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PRG File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Notepad++ isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your PRG with Notepad++, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another PRG application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Obsolete Version of Notepad++
Sometimes your installed version of Notepad++ won't support your Program File file. Installing the latest version of Notepad++ from Don Ho is recommended. Your Program File file was probably created by a newer release of Notepad++ than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PRG file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PRG files are due to having the wrong version of Notepad++ installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading PRG Files
Even with the correct version of Notepad++ installed, you can still experience difficulties opening PRGs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PRG files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:
- PRG file type Registry entries are wrong
- The PRG file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Defective install of a PRG program, such as Notepad++
- Your PRG file is corrupted (issues with your Program File file itself)
- The PRG is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PRG file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Program File file
