Sources of PRX Problems
Frequent PRX Opening Issues
Microsoft Visual FoxPro Disappeared
When you double-click your PRX file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Visual FoxPro isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your PRX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, and you know of another program to open your PRX file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Visual FoxPro is Out-of-Date
Your FoxPro Compiled Program file is incompatible with Microsoft Visual FoxPro because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Microsoft Visual FoxPro version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Investigate your PRX file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of PRX file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Visual FoxPro version installed.
Other Causes of PRX File Opening Problems
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual FoxPro version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PRX files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PRX files. Additional factors include:
- Windows Registry PRX file paths that are incorrect
- Corruption of the PRX file description inside the Registry
- Invalid installation of a PRX-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual FoxPro)
- Something has caused file corruption of your PRX
- PRX file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PRX file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your FoxPro Compiled Program file successfully
