PS1XML Troubleshooting

Troubles Opening PS1XML Files

Microsoft Windows PowerShell Disappeared

When you double-click your PS1XML file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Windows PowerShell for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: Another PS1XML-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Microsoft Windows PowerShell Requires Update

In other instances, your Windows PowerShell Display Configuration File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows PowerShell. Download the latest Microsoft Windows PowerShell version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Windows PowerShell Display Configuration File file was created by a newer Microsoft Windows PowerShell than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PS1XML file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows PowerShell version on your computer can cause problems opening PS1XML files.
