Troubleshooting Problems Opening PSESS Files
Frequent PSESS Opening Issues
Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared
Double-clicking your PSESS file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open PSESS File". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Visual Studio for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your PSESS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your PSESS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Visual Studio is Out-of-Date
Your Microsoft Visual Studio Performance Session file is incompatible with Microsoft Visual Studio because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your Microsoft Visual Studio Performance Session file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your PSESS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening PSESS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional PSESS Opening Issues
Errors opening Microsoft Visual Studio Performance Session files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Visual Studio software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PSESSs. Additional factors include:
- PSESS file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Accidental deletion of the description of the PSESS file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Visual Studio or other PSESS-related program
- The PSESS itself is corrupted
- The PSESS is infected with a virus
- PSESS-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Microsoft Visual Studio Performance Session files
