PSSC Troubleshooting

Troubles Opening PSSC Files

Microsoft Windows Isn't There

When you double-click your PSSC file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Windows installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your PSSC because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your PSSC file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Microsoft Windows is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of Microsoft Windows isn't able to open your Windows PowerShell Session Configuration File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Windows PowerShell Session Configuration File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your PSSC file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows version on your computer can cause problems opening PSSC files.

Additional PSSC Opening Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Windows will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PSSC files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Windows Registry PSSC file paths that are incorrect
  • Deletion of the PSSC file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Invalid installation of a PSSC-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows)
  • The PSSC itself is corrupted
  • The PSSC is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers for PSSC-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Windows PowerShell Session Configuration File file
