PTM File Complications
Typical PTM Opening Challenges
Microsoft MapPoint Not Present
You attempt to load your PTM file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PTM File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft MapPoint installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your PTM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When another PTM application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Incorrect Microsoft MapPoint Version
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft MapPoint installed that's incompatible with your MapPoint Map File type. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft MapPoint. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PTM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the PTM file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft MapPoint installed.
Other PTM File Issues
Errors opening MapPoint Map File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft MapPoint software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PTM files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- PTM file type Registry entries are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PTM description
- Partial installation of Microsoft MapPoint that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your PTM file
- Malware-tainted PTM file can't be opened
- PTM-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows cannot load your MapPoint Map File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
