PUBLISHPROJ Troubleshooting
Common Problems Opening PUBLISHPROJ Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared
Double-clicking your PUBLISHPROJ file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open PUBLISHPROJ File". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Visual Studio for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your PUBLISHPROJ file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Microsoft Visual Studio Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Visual Studio Data file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Visual Studio Data file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PUBLISHPROJ file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PUBLISHPROJ files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading PUBLISHPROJ Files
You can still experience errors opening PUBLISHPROJ files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. Other PUBLISHPROJ opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:
- PUBLISHPROJ file type Registry entries are wrong
- The PUBLISHPROJ file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual Studio that did not fully complete
- The PUBLISHPROJ itself is corrupted
- Your PUBLISHPROJ has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PUBLISHPROJ file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Visual Studio Data file
