Sources of PVG Problems
Typical PVG Opening Challenges
Microsoft Encarta is Not Installed
If you attempt to load your PVG file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open PVG Files". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Encarta for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your PVG with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: Another PVG-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft Encarta Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Encarta installed that's incompatible with your Encarta World Atlas Data File type. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Encarta (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Encarta World Atlas Data File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Encarta than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your PVG file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PVG files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Encarta installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening PVGs
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Encarta version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PVG files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PVGs. Problems unrelated to software:
- PVG file type Registry entries are wrong
- Corruption of the PVG file description inside the Registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Encarta that did not fully complete
- Something has caused file corruption of your PVG
- The PVG is infected with a virus
- Hardware associated with PVG has outdated drivers
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Encarta World Atlas Data File file
