PXT File Complications
Common PXT Opening Problems
Missing Microsoft Excel Mobile
If you attempt to load your PXT file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open PXT Files". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Excel Mobile is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PXT file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: Another PXT-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Excel Mobile
In other instances, your Microsoft Pocket Excel Template file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Excel Mobile. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Excel Mobile (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Pocket Excel Template file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Excel Mobile than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your PXT file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of PXT file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Excel Mobile version installed.
Other PXT File Issues
Errors opening Microsoft Pocket Excel Template files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Excel Mobile software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PXTs. Additional factors include:
- PXT file type Registry entries are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PXT description
- Partial installation of Microsoft Excel Mobile that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your PXT file
- Your PXT has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with PXT has outdated drivers
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Microsoft Pocket Excel Template file successfully
